The Kies family arrived in South Australia from Silesia in 1867, and upon arrival searched for land suitable to grow premium quality grapes. Settling in the utopian hamlet of Lyndoch, the Kies family have been growing grapes ever since.
Current custodians, fifth generation Michael and Tina Kies, respect the efforts expended by their predecessors and believe that hard work produces results. The warmth and honesty of family life are important values for Michael and Tina and they encourage their visitors to slow down, relax, chat and be part of the Kies culture for as long as they wish.
Michael and Tina's children, Bronson, Jesseca and Jordan are proud sixth generation Kies and an important part of the team. Bronson has recently returned to the family business and works alongside his parents managing the dynamic Kies portfolio. When not studying, Jesseca and Jordon can be found guiding visitors through the extensive range of Kies wines in the cellar door, or waiting on guests in the Monkey Nut Cafe.
The past 20 years has seen this hard work translate into a period of great evolution. From humble beginnings in a small iron-stone cottage, the Kies portfolio has expanded from an intimate range of wines to now boast an extensive listing of award-winning drops. However, the Kies evolution did not stop at wine. The family now complement their wine offering with the Kies Tea Shop and Monkey Nut Cafe.
Kies is proud to grow the fruit for their wine in the vineyard directly behind the Cellar Door. The bulk of the vines on the Estate, which include Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet and Semillon were planted in 1965, with several acres of Riesling planted in 1975.
Michael Kies has looked after the vineyard for 20 years and claims to know each vine individually. He has a great passion for ‘his vines', and can be found walking the vineyard every morning.
By managing the separate blocks within the vineyard and tending to varieties individually, outstanding fruit flavour is obtained – and natural fruit flavour is what Kies wine is all about. In fact Kies harvest their grapes using flavour as their guide to ripeness, and only rely on chemical analysis as a last resort.
Whether it’s the multi-award winning Monkey Nut Merlot, named after the lone pine nut tree which founder Ken Kies used as a beacon to bring him home from a day’s flying; our deep red, richly textured Shiraz and Cabernet or our refreshingly crisp Riesling, you’ll know you’re tasting the authentic fruits of the Kies family’s labour.
